Martial Arts Blog: Taoist Reverse Breathing Exercise

Taoist reverse breathing exercise.

The Taoist Reverse breathing exercise or reversed breathing technique is the the opposite of normal breathing. Taoist reverse breathing is a breathing technique practiced in Chinese kung fu and by chi kung (Qi gong) practitioners. Basically it help to clean our internal system by effective circulation of oxygen. It also helps to remove the free radicals from the body. In Chinese martial art (kung fu) styles like bagua zhang (pa kua chang), tai chi chuan, etc and chi kung (qi gong) the reverse breathing is practiced to cultivate the chi energy (internal energy). In some chi kung (Qi gong) systems it is mentioned that this will increase the fire elemental power in our body.

Instructions on doing the Taoist Reverse breathing exercise

Firstly stand relaxed with your feet in shoulder width. Your shoulders must be relaxed, given a little bit awareness to the shoulder joint and observe internally how it is connected with the arms before you start. Likewise try to observe your whole major body joints at once and feel the relaxation with a clam breath before you start. Now relax your mind and swallow your chest . Put your tongue in a way that it lightly touches the upper roof of the mouth and tuck in your chin. Tilt up your pelvis correctly. And now you are ready to begin with the reverse breathing part.

As i told before, this is done just by reversing our ordinary breathing method, which may be one of the most primitive things that we learned. Ok, now you are breaking the rules!, … hey, just kidding…

Begin the breathing exercise by exhaling through mouth. By exhaling, you must clean-out the air by expanding the stomach, the sides of the stomach and the back side of the stomach, that means all the part of abdomen itself. After that inhale slowly and steadily through your nose and at the same time pull-in the stomach. And also you should lift up the the perineum with the inhalation. Now exhale the air through your mouth and at the mean time push out your stomach and let your perineum relaxed. Do all these things gently and relaxed. Don’t ever get tensed up while doing this reverse breathing exercise. This breathing exercise can be used while on “zhan zhuang“, the ’standing meditation’. And like this taoist breathing exercise, we can also use the Buddhist breathing exercise along with zhan zhuang meditation. Zhan zhuang is very powerful and is practiced in many kung fu schools. This will boost up the cultivation of chi, the incredible internal energy.

And a final note on the taoist reverse breathing exercise.

The above taoist reverse breathing techniques is a moderately advanced breathing technique that is taught in internal martial art styles of Chinese kung fu and in internal health systems like chi kung (qi gong). This must be learned and practiced under the guidance of a true master. Unscientific means of practicing will lead to many health problems. Cases are there that self practice of reverse breathing in wrong way, newly invented versions of their own , or even from well known martial arts and chi kung centers had lead to diseases like hemorrhoid, high blood pressure, hernia, problems with stomach etc. So before starting doing it from net, book, training videos or even before joining a class, be alert of this.

What you wrote is a proper way to do this chi breathing technique, as far as i know.
